B is for Belgian Buns

Procrastination is a great thing, as I may have mentioned before. I know many of you think otherwise, but you’re all wrong. Not writing can easily be as useful as bleeding over twenty paragraphs of carefully crafted text.

So if I’m not writing, what am I doing? Well, as that’s the theme of my A to Z challenge, I’ll tell you.

I do many things. But one of the things that I like to do fairly regularly is walk. Writing is almost entirely arse based and as I’m sure you’re all aware, that’s not a good thing. Walking gets you up off that fat arse and gets the blood pumping. But it’s not just walking, it’s thinking.

When I used to do normal jobs I’d walk to work. It was about two miles there and two miles back so I got plenty of exercise and was as thin as a stick. Still thought I was fat though. But it really was just a case of getting from A to B.

Working from home means that when I go for a walk now, it’s a much more deliberate act. Part of it is about keeping fit, but part of it is also thinking time. And thinking time is a vital part of any writing process. As procrastination methods go it’s practically the holy grail. It keeps you from writing whilst being incredibly useful at the same time.

The only problem with walking is, it’s hard. I also have to contend with the weather which is fine when it’s autumn/winter, when I get to wear my favourite hat and my big warm coat, or even in summer, when I look awful in a tee shirt, but at least I know what to wear.

But spring.

Spring hates me and I hate spring. It’s an awful time of year with it’s stupid, clocks going forward, moment that leaves me feeling tired until September and the bloody stupid way it goes running heedlessly toward summer like it’s a long lost aunt arriving at the station with presents and toffees. I BLOODY HATE SUMMER! But what I hate most about spring, is it’s utter lack of direction with regard to the weather.

You never can tell if a spring day is going to be warm or cold. Even if you look out the window and it’s sunny it could still be freezing. Conversely it might look overcast but be boiling hot. Or you might be especially lucky and get one of those days where it rains while being too warm to wear a coat and carrying a brolly on a two mile walk leaves you sweating and looking ridiculous as you hold your umbrella aloft to keep you dry while the sweat drips down you sopping wet head and into your eyes.

Stupid spring.

And that’s why B is for Belgian Buns. I walk a regular route though the park and up to the main road where the cake shop is. My reward for getting out of the house, for doing a bit of exercise, for being a writer, is a lovely sticky Belgian Bun.

Belgian Buns are a great way to avoid writing. Your hands are too sticky to pick up a pen or type so you have no choice but to take your time and enjoy the fruity pastry. I recommend you wash it down slowly with a nice cup of tea or coffee and have a jolly good think about that story of yours and what you can do, that begins with C, to avoid writing it tomorrow.

That’s because I’ve not been out today. And I’m eating cheese on toast.
That’s not relevant, I’m just showing off.

Ooh now I want a Belgian Bun but I’m fasting today.
I really need to do some more walking too.

Mr Uku April 2, 2013 at 11:59 am

Is that when you get a bun a little quicker than usual?

I love to walk, especially in autumn. Do they have to be Belgian? Could they not be Danish? But then, you would need to wait until “d”.

Your summers could never be as aggressive as the ones here. Yours are too polite,

Mr Uku April 2, 2013 at 11:56 am

I am an autumn child, we don’t do warm.
Also, I can’t do D of Danish because I don’t have any Danish photos. I do have donuts though 🙂

If I go walking I have to have a purpose, I don’t enjoy randomly walking by myself so I end up in Sainsburys buying a cake, glad to see it’s not just me. I understand about Spring,as I write this the sun is shinning and it’s hard to see my screen but it is freezing outside, you see it likes to trick us.But how can you not like Summer?

Mr Uku April 2, 2013 at 12:01 pm

Summer is evil and consists of nothing but too much light and too much heat. Both of which are pointless unless you are a flower.

I’ve never tasted a belgian bun. I do agree , a long walk deserves a treat. I like to walk in the evening as then it’s ok to have a glass of wine..or four. Cant be drinking wine in the mornings :p

Good plan.
When I was younger and fitter I used to go jogging to the pub, have a pint and jog home again.

I knew there’d be cake eventually… didn’t think it would be day 2 though.
I shall take your advice though. About the buns anway 🙂

Mr Uku April 2, 2013 at 10:39 pm

There is always cake 🙂
